Check Defaults and Exceptions

Keep general rules separate from row-specific exceptions.

What you'll learn

  • Keep general rules separate from row-specific exceptions.

How to do this drill

  1. Write the default rule first.
  2. Add exceptions on separate lines.
  3. Apply the exception only to its named case.

Material

Transit notice

Default: bicycles are permitted on the river shuttle outside weekday peak periods. Folding bicycles are permitted at all operating times when folded and stored under a seat. During festival weekend, standard bicycles are accepted only from Dock North because Dock South is using a smaller vessel. Mobility devices have priority over bicycles whenever capacity is limited.

Your tasks

  1. Can a folded bicycle travel during weekday peak time?
  2. What extra restriction applies to a standard bicycle during festival weekend?

Answer

Yes, a folded bicycle may travel at all operating times when stored correctly. Standard bicycles must board at Dock North during the festival and remain subject to capacity priority.

How to reach it

  1. State the peak default.
  2. Apply the folding exception narrowly.
  3. Add dock and priority conditions for standard bicycles.

Evidence

The folding-bicycle sentence is an explicit exception to the peak default; the festival restriction names standard bicycles and one dock.

Review your attempt

  • Did the exception alter only its named bicycle type?
  • Did you preserve mobility-device priority?

Take it further

Rewrite the notice as a decision tree with bicycle type as the first branch.
