Mark Chunks and Emphasis

Use idea boundaries and content-word stress to improve intelligibility.

What you'll learn

  • Use idea boundaries and content-word stress to improve intelligibility.

How to do this drill

  1. Mark slash boundaries in the model.
  2. Underline content words.
  3. Shadow once, then retell with your own wording.

Material

Model

I would choose the repair workshop because it gives us direct practice with tools we already own. The online lecture is easier to attend, but watching a demonstration would not solve our main problem. We need someone to check our technique while we work, so the in-person option offers better value despite the longer trip.

Your tasks

  1. Mark four to six meaningful chunks and emphasis words.
  2. Retell the reasoning without copying a complete sentence.

Check your work

Finish the tasks first, then open the answer to compare.

Answer

Chunks should align with choice, reason, concession, limitation, need, and conclusion; emphasis falls on choose, direct practice, easier, not solve, check technique, better value.

How to reach it

  1. Identify function changes.
  2. Stress meaning-bearing words.
  3. Preserve relationships in new language.

Evidence

Pauses after complete idea units make contrast and conclusion audible while retelling confirms the pattern is understood rather than memorized.

Review your attempt

  • Did pauses support syntax and meaning?
  • Did retelling retain concession and conclusion?

Take it further

Mark and retell a personal-experience sample with time-based chunks.
