Declining a Relative’s Loan Request

You are meeting your cousin Devin for lunch at Ashspan Diner in Flintwater, northern Ontario. Devin wants to buy a used car and asks you to co-sign the loan, meaning you would have to make payments if he could not. You need your savings for your own household expenses and cannot take on that risk. Devin says, “Family should stand behind each other,” and reminds you that he helped you move last winter. You appreciate his help, but you need to decline while preserving your relationship.
