Changing Your Moving-Day Promise
Your friend Gavin is moving out of a rented cottage in Mossquay, a coastal town in British Columbia, tomorrow morning. You promised to help carry his furniture, but you injured your shoulder yesterday and cannot do any lifting. Gavin has rented a van and is counting on your help. He could ask another friend to lift with him, although it is short notice. A local moving service also has two movers available for an hour tomorrow, but Gavin had not budgeted for that expense. You need to explain your limits to him today.

What this set practises
- Does your response connect the injury, its effect on the move, and your chosen arrangement in a clear order?
- Do you use natural, precise expressions to explain your limits, acknowledge inconvenience, and offer support?
- Is your speech easy to follow, with a steady pace and brief pauses between ideas?
- Do you address Gavin directly, explain that you cannot lift, and tactfully propose one of the two options within 60 seconds?
